The Spine

Can you stand tall in the face of life's challenges ... or do you feel bent, compressed, dislocated from your own power?

Purpose

The Sacred Channel of Communication

The spine is the interconnected, stacking column of your backbone, built to hold you upright in the world while providing suppleness in your movements. Starting at the "sacred" sacrum, it extends all the way up to the base of your skull. It is the central channel of communication throughout all parts of your body and energy system, carrying vital messages between them. Issues can include pain, injury, nerve compression, dislocation, or anything affecting your ability to stand tall and move easily and freely.

In Susan Drury's understanding, the spine is the body's central axis - the sacred channel through which energy, wisdom, and vitality flow from root to crown. The spine is both structure and conduit: it holds us upright in the physical world while simultaneously serving as the pathway for the subtle energies that connect our earthly experience with our spiritual nature. Susan's work with cranial sacral therapy has given her a deep appreciation for the spine's role as the body's master communicator.

The spine's dual nature - strong enough to support the full weight of the body, yet flexible enough to bend, twist, and stretch - is a perfect metaphor for the human spirit. We need both strength and flexibility to navigate life's challenges. When we lose one at the expense of the other - when we become rigid or when we collapse - the spine reflects this through its many conditions.

◇ Inquiry

When the Backbone Bends

Fear or insecurity can make us feel we "don't have a backbone," or cannot "stand up straight" in meeting situations and challenges in life. Perhaps we feel pressure to "bend too far" to accommodate someone or something beyond what feels right. There may be a sense that our self-determination has been "dislocated," or that we are "hunched over" with too many responsibilities or cares. We can feel "pinched" in our ability to be comfortable, flexible, and empowered in meeting whatever life brings.

"The spine is the body's declaration of sovereignty. When you stand tall, you are saying: I am here. I have a right to be here. I can meet whatever comes. When the spine collapses or stiffens, it is often because that declaration has been challenged ... by fear, by obligation, by the weight of others' expectations."

Working with the Spine Card

Standing Tall Practice

Stand with your feet hip-width apart and imagine a golden thread pulling gently upward from the crown of your head. Feel your spine lengthen, vertebra by vertebra, from sacrum to skull. This is your body's natural alignment - strong, flexible, and open.

Backbone Inquiry

Ask yourself: Where in my life do I need more backbone? Where am I bending too far? Where am I too rigid? The Spine card invites honest reflection on the balance between strength and flexibility in your life.

Spinal Breath

Sit quietly and breathe deeply, imagining each breath travelling up and down your spine ... from sacrum to crown and back again. This practice honours the spine as the central channel of communication and reconnects you with its vital flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my back hurt when I am stressed?

The spine carries the weight of your responsibilities ... literally and metaphorically. When you are 'hunched over' with too many cares, or 'bending too far' to accommodate others, the spine expresses this through pain and tension.

What does 'from root to crown' mean?

The spine extends from the sacrum (root) at the base to the skull (crown) at the top. This mirrors the energy centres described in many traditions. The Spine card invites you to feel the full length of this sacred channel and the energy that flows through it.

How does this card relate to personal power?

Standing tall is one of the most primal expressions of personal power. The Spine card is about reclaiming your right to stand upright in the world - to take up space, to be seen, to meet life's challenges with both strength and flexibility.

Stand Tall, Bend with Grace

Your spine is the sacred channel through which your full power flows. Stand aligned from root to crown, upright, open, and ready for all that unfolds.
