Elevated Body Card - Shoulders

Elevated Body Oracle Deck

The Shoulders

Are you carrying the weight of the world ... or do you know what is and is not yours to shoulder?

Purpose

Stability, Strength, and Supple Flexibility

The shoulders are the pair of sturdy, stable joints on each side at the top of your torso, from which your arms extend out. Three bones merge together in a ball-and-socket design, ingeniously "girdled" by muscles and ligaments to stabilise flexible movement in many directions. Supported by them, your upper limbs can perform an "extend-sive" range of activities that require both strength and suppleness to accomplish. Issues include stiffness, "frozen shoulder," pain and inflammation, often due to injury, dislocation, over-use, or arthritis.

In Susan Drury's understanding, the shoulders are where we carry the weight of our responsibilities - and where we discover the wisdom of knowing what is and is not ours to carry. The shoulders are the bridge between the heart and the hands - between what we feel and what we do in the world. When this bridge is overloaded, the shoulders freeze, stiffen, and cry out in pain.

Susan teaches that shoulder issues often reflect an imbalance between giving and receiving. The left shoulder, connected to the emotional and receptive side, can feel "girdled" by others' emotional demands. The right shoulder, connected to action and duty, may become "frozen" through an overly extended sense of responsibility. The Shoulders card invites a return to balance - stable yet flexible, strong yet willing to set down what is too heavy.

◇ Inquiry

When the Weight Becomes Too Much

If we over-extend ourselves through "shouldering" responsibilities beyond what we can comfortably carry, we can stiffen, feel "jammed up," and lose our sense of supple flexibility. We can feel obligated to "carry the weight of the world" as a way to prove our worth. Issues with the left shoulder can reflect feeling "girdled" by others' emotional demands ... coupled with difficulty receiving or accepting support for what weighs us down. The right shoulder may become "frozen" through an overly extended sense of duty to protect and shoulder practical responsibility for others.

"The shoulders carry what the heart cannot say. When we take on too much - when we shoulder the world's weight to prove our worth - the body speaks through stiffness, pain, and frozen movement. The Shoulders card whispers: set it down. You do not have to carry everything."

Working with the Shoulders Card

Weight Inventory

Make a list of everything you are currently carrying - responsibilities, obligations, emotional burdens. For each one, ask: Is this mine to carry? Can I set it down? Can I ask for help? The Shoulders card invites honest assessment of your load.

Shoulder Release

Roll your shoulders slowly backward, then forward. With each rotation, imagine setting down one burden that is not yours to carry. Feel the space that opens as the weight lifts. This simple movement can release years of accumulated tension.

Left and Right Inquiry

Notice which shoulder holds more tension. If the left: Where am I overwhelmed by emotional demands? If the right: Where am I over-extending my sense of duty? This inquiry reveals the specific nature of what you are carrying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my left shoulder always tense?

The left shoulder is connected to the emotional and receptive side. Tension here often reflects feeling overwhelmed by others' emotional demands, or difficulty receiving support. The Shoulders card invites you to examine where you are taking on emotional weight that is not yours.

What does 'frozen shoulder' mean symbolically?

A frozen shoulder represents a complete shutdown of movement ... the body's way of saying 'I cannot extend any further.' It often reflects an overly extended sense of duty or responsibility that has become so overwhelming that the body simply stops.

How do I know what is mine to carry?

Ask yourself: Does this responsibility bring me alive, or does it drain me? Am I carrying this out of love, or out of obligation? The Shoulders card teaches that true strength includes the wisdom to set down what is too heavy and ask for help.

Set Down What Is Too Heavy

Your shoulders are broad, strong, and supple. Trust in their capacity - and in the wisdom of knowing what is and is not yours to carry.
