Purpose
The Body's Great Alchemist
As your liver, I am the largest internal gland in your body. Along with filtering and regulating essential chemical components in your blood, I am responsible for metabolizing, filtering, and detoxifying everything you consume. Your gallbladder is tucked behind me, where it stores and concentrates the yellowish-green bile I send it. Appropriate amounts of bile get released into your intestines, to aid in the digestion and absorption of fats. Sub-optimal functioning can include abscess, inflammation, stones, cirrhosis, hepatitis, jaundice, and other complications.
In Susan Drury's understanding, the liver is the body's great alchemist - the organ that transforms what is toxic into what is usable, what is harmful into what is harmless. This is not merely a physical function. It is a metaphor for one of the most real capacities of human consciousness: the ability to take what has been painful, unjust, or destructive and transform it through understanding, compassion, and forgiveness into wisdom and growth. The liver does not reject what is toxic - it processes it. And in that processing, it teaches us something essential about how to live.
The gallbladder, tucked behind the liver, concentrates the bile - the bitterness - and releases it in measured doses to aid digestion. When the gallbladder is overwhelmed, the bitterness hardens into stones. The language of the body is precise: we speak of being "galled" by someone's behaviour, of something "galling" us, of being "green with envy." These expressions are the body's wisdom speaking through the language of the liver and gallbladder.
◇ Inquiry
When Bitterness Hardens into Stone
When we feel confronted, resentful, or embittered by relationships or circumstances, it "galls" us. In fact, the physical substance of gall is behind the phrase "green with envy." Unless we recognize and process our emotions, stored anger and bitterness remains toxic and stuck within us. Eventually they can harden into "stones" of depression, disempowerment, indignation, and self-righteous judgment. Our unresolved internal pain and conflicts can easily lead to ongoing dysfunction, including the intake of toxic substances and addiction.
"The liver is the body's forgiveness organ. It does not hold grudges - it processes everything that comes to it, no matter how toxic. When we learn from the liver, we discover that forgiveness is not about condoning what happened. It is about metabolizing the experience so that it no longer poisons us from within."
Susan's approach invites you to bring awareness to the liver and gallbladder - to notice where anger, bitterness, or resentment may have accumulated in your body and your life. The Liver and Gallbladder card does not ask you to suppress these emotions or to pretend they do not exist. It asks you to acknowledge them, to honour them as valid responses to genuine pain, and then to begin the alchemical process of transforming them through understanding and compassion - just as the liver transforms toxins into harmless substances that the body can release.
✦ Transcendence
The Affirmation Your Liver Has Been Waiting to Hear
"I have the power to fully metabolize all I have taken in, and consumed. This includes experiences I perceived as unjust, offensive, destructive, or just plain wrong."
"I am open, honest, and clear in all my relations, and filter out that which is not life-supporting for myself or others."
"I process bitterness, resentment and anger through the alchemy of understanding, compassion and appreciation as I choose to remember we are all integral parts of a greater whole."
Read these words aloud and place your hand over the right side of your ribcage, where your liver resides. Feel the warmth of your hand and the quiet, tireless work of this extraordinary organ. The transcendence is an invitation to join the liver in its alchemical work - to transform what has been bitter into what is wise, what has been toxic into what is nourishing, what has been stuck into what flows freely.
Working with the Liver & Gallbladder Card
Resentment Inventory
Hold the card and ask yourself: Who or what am I still bitter about? Write a list without censoring. Then, for each item, ask: What would it mean to fully metabolize this experience? What wisdom might be waiting on the other side of this bitterness?
Detox Visualization
Close your eyes and imagine a warm, golden light flowing through your liver. See it dissolving any hardened stones of resentment, transforming dark, stuck energy into clear, flowing light. Breathe deeply and allow the visualization to work at its own pace.
Forgiveness Practice
Choose one person or situation from your resentment inventory. Write a letter you will never send, expressing everything you feel. Then write a second letter, this time from the perspective of your liver - an organ that processes everything without judgment, transforming toxins into harmless substances.

Learn More About SusanFrequently Asked Questions
Why is the liver associated with anger?
In traditional Chinese medicine and in Susan's body-wisdom approach, the liver is the organ most associated with anger and frustration. When anger is not expressed or processed, it accumulates in the liver, eventually manifesting as physical symptoms. The liver's job is to detoxify - and unprocessed anger is one of the most toxic emotions.
What does it mean when the gallbladder forms stones?
Gallstones are concentrated bile - literally hardened bitterness. From a body-wisdom perspective, they represent emotions that have been stored for so long that they have solidified. The Liver and Gallbladder card invites you to dissolve these stones through the alchemy of awareness, understanding, and compassion.
Can this card help with addiction patterns?
The card provides a framework for understanding the emotional roots of addictive behaviour - the unresolved pain and bitterness that drives the intake of toxic substances. While it is not a substitute for professional treatment, it can be a powerful complement to recovery work.
Transform Bitterness into Wisdom
Your liver has been faithfully processing everything you have consumed - physically, emotionally, and spiritually - since before you were born. It is time to honour its tireless work and to join it in the alchemy of transformation.
