Purpose
The Interface Between Self and World
Your face is the surface appearance that you show to the world, identifying you to yourself and others as "you." It is how you are recognised and remembered. Although facial features are standard, each person's appearance and expressions are unique and distinct - no two faces tell quite the same story. As the part of you that is most visible, the face is the primary way you "inter-face" with life. Through it, you interact with others and the world, using expression, eye contact, sensation, and mobility to communicate who you are and how you feel.
In Susan Drury's understanding, the face is the body's most intimate communicator - the part of us that is most seen, most judged, and most vulnerable. Every emotion we feel passes across the face, whether we intend it to or not. The face is also the part of us that we most often try to control, to mask, to present in a way that we hope will be acceptable. This tension between authentic expression and controlled presentation is at the heart of the Face card's teaching.
Susan teaches that the face is not merely a surface - it is a window. When we stop hiding behind masks and allow our authentic self to be seen, something remarkable happens: the radiance of the soul begins to shine through every expression, every line, every nuance. This is the true beauty of the face - not its conformity to cultural standards, but its transparency to the soul within.
◇ Inquiry
When the Mask Becomes the Prison
We can feel ashamed or embarrassed by the "face" we think we show to the world. We may want to "put on a mask" to try and hide perceived imperfections or inadequacies - either visible on the surface, or hidden within. We get uncomfortable if we sense we are not being accepted at "face value," or that others do not truly see us. When we feel fearful or uncertain, we might do an "about-face" and just walk away; or "save face," and hold back meaningful communication, rather than reveal our true and authentic self.
"The face is where the soul meets the world. Every mask you wear - no matter how beautiful or convincing - creates a barrier between your authentic self and the life that is waiting to meet you. The Face card invites you to remove the masks, one by one, and discover that what lies beneath is more beautiful than anything you could construct."
✦ Transcendence
The Affirmation Your Face Has Been Waiting to Hear
"I fully accept and delight in the multitude of ways I show my face to the world."
"I no longer hide behind masks or shrink from being seen. I embrace every line, every expression, every nuance that makes my face uniquely and beautifully mine."
"Shining through and beyond all superficial appearances is the radiance of my soul, revealing kindness and love through all my expressions."
Working with the Face Card
Mirror Practice
Look at your face in a mirror - not to judge, but to see. Notice the lines that laughter has carved, the expressions that experience has shaped. Each mark on your face tells a story. The Face card invites you to read that story with love.
Mask Inventory
Identify the masks you wear in different situations - the professional mask, the social mask, the 'I'm fine' mask. For each one, ask: What am I hiding? What would happen if I let this mask go? The Face card invites gradual, courageous authenticity.
Expression Practice
Allow your face to express what you are actually feeling - without editing, without controlling, without performing. This might feel vulnerable at first. That vulnerability is the doorway to authentic connection.

Why do we wear masks?
We wear masks to protect ourselves - from judgment, rejection, or vulnerability. While masks can serve a purpose in certain situations, the Face card invites you to examine which masks have become prisons, preventing authentic connection with yourself and others.
How does the Face card relate to self-acceptance?
The Face card is fundamentally about self-acceptance - embracing every line, every expression, every imperfection as part of your unique story. When you accept your face as it is, you free the radiance of your soul to shine through.
What does 'face value' mean in this context?
It means being seen and accepted for who you truly are - not for the mask you present, not for the performance you give, but for the authentic, imperfect, radiant being that you are beneath all surface appearances.
Let Your Radiance Shine Through
Your face is uniquely and beautifully yours. Remove the masks, embrace every expression, and let the radiance of your soul shine through all that you are.
