A Practice for Releasing Shoulder Tension and Reclaiming Freedom

The body never lies. This is one of the most profound truths I have encountered in over three decades of healing work.

And so much of that business seems to land squarely on our shoulders.

I remember years ago, carrying a ridiculously heavy shoulder bag everywhere I went. It was my mobile office, my library, my apothecary. One day, a dear friend watched me hoist it onto my shoulder with a grunt and said, gently, “Susan, what on earth are you carrying?” It wasn’t just about the weight of the bag. It was a soul-level question. It stopped me in my tracks. What was I carrying? And whose was it?

Our shoulders—these incredibly mobile, expressive joints—are the cradle of our responsibilities. They are the place where we physically and energetically take on the weight of our world, our work, our families, our histories. They are the gateway of extension, the foundation from which we reach out to give and to receive. But for so many of us, the gateway is jammed. The cradle is overflowing. We are carrying burdens that were never ours to begin with, and the strain is becoming unbearable.

That persistent ache between your shoulder blades, the tightness in your neck, the feeling that you are perpetually braced for impact… this is not just muscular tension. This is your body, in its infinite wisdom, speaking to you. It is sending you a message, a sacred invitation to look at the weight you are carrying and to begin, with great compassion, to set it down.

The Anatomy of a Burden

In the language of the body, the shoulders tell a story of doing and being, of giving and receiving. The right shoulder, often associated with the masculine principle, speaks to our sense of duty, protection, and how we do things in the world. The left shoulder, aligned with the feminine principle, reflects our emotional burdens and our capacity to receive.

When these are out of balance, we feel it. An overburdened right shoulder might speak of over-working, of protecting everyone else while leaving yourself undefended. A heavy left shoulder can be the physical manifestation of carrying the emotional pain of others, or the weight of your own ungrieved sorrows. Often, it’s both. We develop these patterns of holding so early in life, creating deep neural pathways that tell our muscles to stay clenched, to remain on high alert. Our nervous system learns that “braced and burdened” is the baseline for survival.

But here is a very good thing to know: you are not broken. Your body is not failing you. It is communicating with you. And through the beautiful gift of neuroplasticity, we can create new pathways. We can teach our bodies—and our souls—a new way of being. We can learn the art of discernment, the practice of putting down what isn’t ours, and the grace of carrying only what is essential with strength and ease.

What would it be like to feel that freedom? To move through your day with a sense of lightness and extension, rather than compression and strain? Let’s explore that together.

A Guided Practice for Reclaiming Your Shoulders

This is not a quick fix, beloved one. It is a practice of returning, again and again, to a place of conscious relationship with your body. Find a quiet space where you can be undisturbed for fifteen minutes. Sit comfortably in a chair with your feet flat on the floor, or on a cushion on the floor. Allow your hands to rest gently on your thighs.

Step 1: The Gentle Release

Let’s begin by simply bringing awareness to the physical structures. Close your eyes, or soften your gaze toward the floor. Take a deep, nourishing breath in, and as you exhale, let a sigh escape your lips.

  • Head Tilts: Gently, slowly, allow your right ear to drift down toward your right shoulder. Don’t force it. Just let gravity do the work. You may feel a gentle line of sensation along the left side of your neck and into your shoulder. Breathe into it. Hold for three slow breaths. Then, just as slowly, bring your head back to center. Repeat on the left side.
  • Shoulder Shrugs: On your next inhale, draw both of your shoulders up towards your ears, squeezing them tight. Imagine you are gathering up all the tension, all the tightness. Hold for a moment. And on the exhale, let them drop completely with a sigh. Haaaaa. Do this three times, with intention.
  • Shoulder Rolls: Now, begin to roll your shoulders up and back, in a slow, circular motion. Imagine you are creating space between your shoulder blades. Feel the gentle movement of the three bones that meet at this sacred joint. After five backward rolls, reverse the direction, rolling them forward five times. Notice the difference.

Step 2: The Burden Visualization

Bring your shoulders to a place of rest—back and down. Feel the new space you’ve created. Now, let’s explore the weight they have been carrying.

With your eyes still closed, I invite you to imagine, or feel, or simply know that there are heavy stones resting upon your shoulders. You don’t need to know what they are called. Just sense their presence, their texture, their temperature, their weight. This is the weight of expectations—yours and others. The weight of old griefs. The weight of responsibilities you’ve taken on that belong to someone else. The weight of feeling you are not enough, or that you are too much.

For a few moments, just be present with this weight. Acknowledge it without judgment. It has been a part of your story. It has served you in some way, perhaps. Thank it for the lesson.

Now, see in your mind’s eye that you are standing at the edge of a beautiful, flowing river. You look down at your shoulders, and you realize, with a clarity that comes from deep within, that you no longer need to carry these stones. You have a choice.

One by one, I invite you to reach up and take a stone from your shoulder. Feel its weight in your hands. And then, with a conscious intention of release, gently toss it into the river. Watch it go. Hear the soft splash as it meets the water. Feel the immediate lightness as its weight is removed. Do this with each and every stone, each and every burden. Take your time. This is your sacred release. There is no rush. Let the river of life carry them away, transforming them back into sand, back into earth.

Stay here, at the river’s edge, until your shoulders feel free.

Step 3: Balancing Giving and Receiving

With your shoulders now light, bring your awareness to your heart center. Imagine a soft, warm light glowing there. This is your essence. On your next inhale, imagine that light expanding, filling your chest.

As you exhale, imagine that warm light flowing out from your heart, down your arms, through your elbows, into your wrists, and out through the palms of your hands. This is your gift to the world. This is the energy of doing, of serving, of loving, flowing from a full and spacious place.

Now, as you inhale, turn your palms to face upward. Imagine you are drawing in energy from the world around you—not burdens, but nourishment. Golden light, loving support, the very breath of life. Draw it in through your hands, up your arms, and into your heart. This is the energy of receiving. It is your birthright.

Continue this for several breaths—exhaling your gift, inhaling your nourishment. Feel the balance. This is the natural, intended flow. Giving from a place of fullness, and receiving with an open, deserving heart. This is the freedom of the shoulders as the gateway of extension.

When you feel complete, gently bring your hands back to your lap. Take one final, deep breath. And when you are ready, slowly open your eyes.

A Daily Practice of Lightness

This deep practice is a powerful tool for transformation. But the work of reclaiming freedom is also in the small, daily moments. I recommend a simple, two-minute daily shoulder practice to maintain this new awareness.

Each morning, before you begin your day, stand and take a moment to check in with your shoulders. Are they creeping up toward your ears? Are they rounded forward? Consciously drop them. Roll them back and down. Take three deep, intentional breaths, imagining that sense of spaciousness between your shoulder blades. Ask yourself, “What am I carrying today? And what can I set down before I even begin?” This simple act of conscious check-in can rewire those ancient neural pathways, creating a new habit of lightness and ease that will ripple through your entire day.

It is a practice of discernment. It is a practice of compassion. It is a practice of returning to the truth of who you are beneath the weight of the world: a being of light, designed to move with grace and freedom. You are not meant to be a beast of burden. You are meant to be a vessel of love, extending your unique gifts from a place of grounded, spacious strength.

May you feel the lightness in your shoulders, the freedom in your heart, and the love that is always, always available to you.
