Reaching For The Higher Self

We are, all of us, walking contradictions. And that, beloved, is not a flaw.

We walk this earth in these beautiful, complex bodies, carrying stories that began long before we took our first breath. We learn to navigate the world through a mind that is a master pattern-maker, a storyteller, a protector. And most of the time, we believe that’s all we are — this body, this mind, this collection of experiences. But what if there was a part of you that remembers a deeper truth?

A part of you that is not caught in the story of your wounds, or the anxieties of your ego, or the relentless chatter of your inner critic? A part of you that is pure, unwavering, and connected to the infinite wisdom of the universe?

There is. I call it the Higher Self.

It’s a term that can feel a bit… lofty, I know. It might conjure images of ascended masters on mountaintops or beings of pure light. And while the energy of it is certainly vast and luminous, the experience of it is profoundly intimate. It is the wisest, most loving, most authentic essence of who you are. It is the you that exists beyond the noise. It is the part of you that was never wounded, never broken, and never lost. It is the eternal, unwavering, and unconditionally loving core of your being.

I’ve come to know my Higher Self not as a distant deity to be worshipped, but as the most trusted voice within me. It is the quiet hum beneath the clamor of my thoughts. It is the gentle pull toward compassion when my ego wants to build a wall. It is the unwavering knowing in my bones that everything, truly everything, is unfolding in perfect, mysterious, and often painful, order.

The Voice Beneath the Noise

So what is this Higher Self, really? It’s not the part of you that’s striving to get that promotion, or worrying about what your neighbor thinks, or replaying that awkward conversation from last week. That’s the ego-mind, and it has a very important job: to keep you safe, to help you function in the three-dimensional world. It’s the project manager of your life. It’s brilliant at what it does. But its perspective is, by design, limited.

The ego is concerned with survival, with identity, with being right. It operates from a place of past experience and future projection. It’s the voice that says, “Don’t do that, you’ll fail,” or “You need to be more like them to be loved.” It’s a necessary part of our human architecture, but it is not the totality of who we are.

The Higher Self, on the other hand, is the architect. It holds the blueprint. It doesn’t operate from fear or lack. Its currency is love, wisdom, and a deep, resonant peace. It is the part of your consciousness that is eternally connected to the source of all life — whatever you may call that. God, Universe, Tao, Great Spirit. The name is not important. The connection is.

Connecting with the Higher Self is not about obliterating the ego. It’s about gently turning down the volume on its incessant chatter so you can hear the symphony playing in the background. It’s about learning to distinguish the voice of fear from the voice of wisdom.

The Neuroscience of Transcendence

This isn’t just spiritual poetry. There’s a fascinating correlation in the world of neuroscience. Neuroscientists have identified a network in the brain called the Default Mode Network (DMN). The DMN is most active when we are not focused on a specific task — when our minds are wandering, daydreaming, or thinking about ourselves, others, the past, and the future. It’s the neural correlate of our narrative self, our ego.

It’s the part of the brain that generates the story of “me.”

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. In studies of long-term meditators, as well as in people undergoing profound transcendent experiences (sometimes with the aid of psychedelics), a consistent pattern emerges: a significant decrease in the activity of the Default Mode Network. As the DMN quiets down, so does the sense of a separate, isolated self. The boundaries between “me” and “the world” begin to dissolve. This is often accompanied by feelings of oceanic boundlessness, of being connected to everything, of profound love and a sense of timelessness.

In these moments, we are not losing our minds; we are getting out of their way. We are temporarily silencing the project manager to have a meeting with the architect. We are accessing a state of consciousness that is not bound by our personal story. We are, in essence, having a direct experience of our Higher Self. This is the state that ancient spiritual traditions have pointed to for millennia — the state of non-dual awareness, of unity consciousness. It’s not a state we need to achieve, but rather a state we can return to. The neural pathways for this experience exist within every one of us, waiting to be activated.

This doesn’t require a mountaintop or a monastery. It can happen in the quiet of your living room, on a walk in the woods, or even in the midst of a great challenge, when the ego finally surrenders its grip because it has run out of options.

A Personal Journey

My own relationship with my Higher Self wasn’t a lightning bolt moment. It was a slow, quiet turning. For years, my healing work was about untangling the knots of trauma, of conditioning, of ancestral patterns. It was deep, necessary, and often grueling work. I was mapping the terrain of the ego and the wounded inner child.

But along the way, I began to notice a different presence. A quiet, unwavering light that was there even in the darkest moments. It was the part of me that could hold the pain without being consumed by it. It was the part of me that whispered, “Keep going, beloved one. There is a reason for this.”

I remember a time, many years ago, when I was facing a profound personal crisis. My world felt like it was crumbling. My ego was in a full-blown panic, screaming at me to do something, to fix it, to control the outcome. I was exhausted, terrified, and felt utterly lost.

One afternoon, I simply gave up. I went to my room, curled up on the floor, and sobbed. I let go of the fight. I surrendered. And in that surrender, something shifted. The frantic energy dissipated, and a deep, profound stillness settled over me. It was in that stillness that I heard it — not as words, but as a feeling, a knowing. A wave of unconditional love washed over me, and a simple truth landed in my body: You are safe. You are held. All is well.

It wasn’t a denial of the crisis. The crisis was still very real. But I was no longer alone in it. I was being held by a part of myself that was bigger than the problem. That was my Higher Self, making its presence known in the quiet space created by my surrender. It didn’t offer me a five-point plan to fix my life. It didn’t promise that the pain would instantly vanish. It simply offered a presence that was so vast and so loving that the pain was no longer the only thing that was true. It was a profound lesson in the difference between solving a problem from the level of the ego, and holding it in the compassionate embrace of a higher consciousness.

This is the guidance that has shaped my life and my work ever since. It’s the difference between a goal driven by the ego’s need for validation (“I need to write a book to prove I’m an expert”) and guidance from the Higher Self (“There is a wisdom that wants to be shared through you”). The first feels like a striving, a pushing. The second feels like an unfolding, a sacred responsibility.

Cultivating the Connection

So how do we begin to cultivate this relationship? How do we learn to hear this quiet voice amidst the noise of modern life?

It begins with creating moments of stillness. It’s not about emptying your mind — that’s an impossible task. It’s about giving your mind a gentle place to rest, so that what lies beneath it can emerge.

“Silence is a source of Great Strength.” - Lao Tzu

Here are a few gentle invitations:

  • The Sacred Pause: Several times a day, simply stop what you are doing. Close your eyes. Take one deep, conscious breath. Let your attention drop from your head down into your body. Feel your feet on the ground. Feel the weight of your body in your chair. That’s it. You’ve just created a tiny portal out of the DMN and into the present moment. Do this as you wait for the kettle to boil. Do this in your car before you walk into your office. Do this when you feel the familiar grip of anxiety begin to tighten in your chest. Each pause is a repetition, strengthening the neural pathway of presence. Think of it as carving a new groove in your consciousness. The more you do it, the easier it becomes to access that state of quiet presence, even in the midst of chaos. It is a profound act of self-love, a declaration that you are worthy of your own attention.

  • Body Wisdom: Your body is a direct conduit to your Higher Self. It doesn’t speak in the language of shoulds and shouldn’ts, but in the language of sensation: expansion and contraction, lightness and heaviness, resonance and dissonance. When you are facing a decision, bring the options into your body. Does the thought of saying “yes” create a feeling of openness in your chest? Or a tightening in your gut? Your body knows the truth. Learn to listen to its subtle, wise whispers. The mind can rationalize anything. The body cannot lie. This is the essence of body wisdom. It is the direct, unmediated intelligence of life itself, speaking to you in every moment. It takes practice to learn this language, especially if we have spent a lifetime ignoring it, but it is a homecoming worth the journey. When I first began to consciously listen to my body, it was a revelation. I had spent decades living in my head, analyzing and intellectualizing my experiences. To drop into the pure sensation of my body felt like coming home to a long-lost friend. It was where I found the undigested grief, the unspoken joy, and the deep, unwavering wisdom that my mind could never have accessed.

  • Nature’s Mirror: Spend time in nature, not as a backdrop for your run or your conversation, but as a living presence. Notice the way the light filters through the leaves. Feel the breeze on your skin. Watch the effortless way a river flows around obstacles. Nature is a perfect reflection of the Higher Self — always present, always whole, always in a state of graceful unfolding. Let it remind you of the same qualities within yourself. The ego sees the forest as a collection of individual trees, something to be managed or consumed. The Higher Self experiences the forest as a single, interconnected intelligence, a living system of which it is a part. When we immerse ourselves in nature, we are attuning our own frequency to this deeper reality. I often recommend to my clients that they find a ‘sit spot’ in nature, a place they can return to again and again. As you build a relationship with this one spot, you begin to notice the subtle shifts — the new buds in spring, the way the light changes with the seasons. You are training your awareness to perceive a deeper, slower rhythm. This is the rhythm of the Higher Self.

  • Contemplative Journaling: Instead of just chronicling your day, ask your journal a deeper question. You might write at the top of the page, “What does my Higher Self want me to know right now?” Then, just let your pen move. Don’t edit, don’t judge. Let whatever wants to come through, come through. You might be surprised at the wisdom that emerges when you get your analytical mind out of the way. This is not about channeling some external entity. It is about creating a clear channel to your own deepest knowing. The first few times, it might feel like you’re ‘making it up.’ That’s okay. The ego is clever and will try to dismiss what it cannot control. Keep going. With practice, the voice of your Higher Self will become clearer, more distinct, and utterly trustworthy. And you will know it not by its volume, but by its quality. The voice of the ego is often loud, urgent, and tinged with fear. The voice of the Higher Self is quiet, calm, and resonant with a feeling of peace and rightness. It feels like truth.

This is not another thing to add to your to-do list. This is not a self-improvement project. It is a returning. A remembering of the magnificent, wise, and loving being you have always been, beneath the stories, beneath the wounds, beneath the noise.

It is the journey of a lifetime, and it is available to you in this very moment, in this very breath.

  • The Witnessing Presence: This is a more advanced practice, but one that is deeply transformative. As you go about your day, see if you can cultivate a part of your awareness that is simply watching, without judgment. Watch your thoughts come and go like clouds in the sky. Watch your emotions rise and fall like waves in the ocean. Watch your reactions to people and events. This watcher, this silent, compassionate witness, is an aspect of your Higher Self. It is the part of you that is not identified with the drama of your life, but can hold it all with unconditional love. The more you identify with the witness rather than the story, the more freedom you will experience. It is the ultimate act of dis-entanglement from the ego’s grip, and a direct path to the peace and wisdom of your true nature.
