I want to speak to the part of you that is tired. The part that has been carrying something heavy for a very long time.
We walk around in these beautiful, complex bodies, feeling so solid, so separate. We stub a toe on a misplaced chair leg, and the pain is undeniably, sharply real. We hold a warm mug of tea on a cold morning, and the comfort is entirely, intimately our own. We experience life through a lens of distinct, personal sensation. And yet… what if our deeply ingrained sense of solid separateness is only one part of a much, much larger, more mysterious, and more magical story?
I remember the first time I truly began to grasp the principles of quantum physics, not as an abstract intellectual concept, but as a living, breathing reality. It wasn’t in a university classroom, surrounded by blackboards of equations, but in the quiet, contemplative space of my own healing journey. I was grappling with a physical symptom that defied all logical explanation: a persistent, deep, and resonant ache in my right shoulder that no amount of bodywork, stretching, or rest could seem to touch. It felt… ancient. Stubborn. As if it held a story I couldn’t quite hear, a message encoded in the very tissues of my body.
A dear friend, a brilliant physicist with a wonderfully patient heart, tried to explain the observer effect to me over coffee one afternoon. He spoke of the bizarre and wondrous world of subatomic particles, a realm where the rules of our solid, predictable world simply don’t apply. He described how a particle, like an electron, doesn’t exist in one specific place until it is measured. Instead, it exists in a state of pure potential—a “probability wave,” a cloud of infinite possibilities. It is everywhere and nowhere at once. But then, the moment a conscious observer decides to look, to measure it, that cloud of potential collapses. The wave becomes a particle. A single, definite reality is chosen from an infinite menu of possibilities, simply by the act of being seen.
I’m not a physicist. I don’t pretend to grasp the complex mathematics that underpin these astonishing theories. But as he spoke, something deep inside me, in the quiet, intuitive wisdom of my own body, resonated with a profound sense of recognition. The act of observing changes what is being observed.
This wasn’t just a clever idea. It was a truth I could feel in my bones. What if this principle wasn’t just confined to tiny, invisible particles in a highly controlled laboratory setting? What if it was true for the trillions of particles that make up… me? What if it was true for the stubborn, story-filled ache in my shoulder?
The Universe in a Glance
This is not just esoteric, philosophical speculation; it is a foundational, if baffling, principle of modern science. The famous double-slit experiment, repeated and verified countless times, provides the most elegant and mind-bending illustration. When a stream of photons—particles of light—is shot at a screen with two small slits in it, the photons behave as a wave when they are not being watched. They seem to pass through both slits at once, interfering with each other to create a characteristic wave pattern on the detector screen behind them. It’s as if each particle knows about the other and they are dancing together in a coordinated way.
But here is the mystery: the moment a detector is placed at the slits to determine which one each individual photon goes through, the wave pattern vanishes. The very act of looking forces the photon to “choose” a path. It behaves like a solid little particle, going through one slit or the other, and the pattern on the screen becomes two simple bands, just as you’d expect if you were throwing tiny marbles. The observer’s measurement, the simple act of asking “which one?” determines the reality that unfolds.
Take a slow, deep breath and let that land in your body. The universe, at its most fundamental, subatomic level, seems to respond directly to our attention and intention.
For more than thirty years, I have had the sacred privilege of sitting with clients in the healing room, and I have witnessed this very principle play out in the most profound, tangible, and life-altering ways. When we learn to bring our conscious, loving, non-judgmental awareness to a part of the body that is in pain, that is holding a rigid pattern of tension or disease, something miraculous begins to shift. The pattern is no longer just a static, unchanging “problem” to be solved or eliminated. It is being seen. It is being met with the energy of awareness. And in that compassionate seeing, it begins to change.
Our thoughts, our intentions, our deeply held beliefs—these are not just ephemeral, meaningless wisps of nothingness floating through our minds. They are potent forms of energy. They are the focusing lens of observation. When we direct our focus, we are directing a powerful creative force. The crucial question, then, is not if we are creating our reality, but what kind of reality we are creating. What kind of observer are we choosing to be?
Are we observing our pain with frustration, with fear, with the tense, contracted energy of “I need to fix this broken thing”? Or can we learn to observe with radical compassion, with boundless curiosity, with the gentle, open-hearted inquiry: “Beloved one, what is the story you are holding for me? What do you need me to know?”
The Heart's Astonishing Power
This is where the science becomes even more breathtaking, and where it circles back with perfect synchronicity to the ancient wisdom traditions that have always known the heart is infinitely more than just a mechanical pump. The HeartMath Institute, a pioneering research organization, has spent decades studying the physiology of emotions and the power of the heart. Their research has revealed that the heart generates a powerful electromagnetic field—by far the most powerful and extensive of any organ in the body. It is approximately 60 times greater in amplitude than the electrical activity generated by the brain, and its magnetic component is around 5,000 times stronger than the brain’s magnetic field. This field is not confined to the body; it can be detected several feet away in all directions, forming a torus-shaped field of energy around us.
This isn’t just a blank field of energy; it’s a field of rich information. The rhythm and pattern of our heart—our heart rate variability (HRV)—changes dramatically depending on our emotional state. When we feel stress, frustration, anxiety, or anger, the heart’s rhythm becomes chaotic, jagged, and disordered. But when we intentionally cultivate feelings of love, gratitude, appreciation, or compassion, the heart’s rhythm shifts into a state of beautiful, harmonious coherence—a smooth, orderly, sine-wave-like pattern. The double-slit experiment still astonishes me every time I return to it, and how the observer effect changes reality lays out that mystery in plain, unhurried language.
This coherent wave doesn’t stay within us. It radiates out from our heart center, and it has been shown to have a measurable, calming, and ordering effect on the nervous systems of other people, and even animals, in our vicinity. Your loving, coherent heart, quite literally, broadcasts a signal of peace and harmony into the world.
This is the profound integration of quantum physics and deep healing that has become the cornerstone of my life and my work. We are not just passively observing our own inner world; we are actively broadcasting a signal from the core of our being. Our state of consciousness is not a private affair. It is a public broadcast that is constantly, silently shaping the reality we inhabit—both within our own skin and in the energetic space we share with all of life.

So how do we begin to practice this in our daily lives? How do we move from a fascinating scientific concept to a lived, embodied reality that can genuinely transform our health and well-being?
It begins with the body. In my experience, it always begins with the body. The body is the instrument, the unerring feedback system, the essential grounding point for our consciousness.
That stubborn ache in my shoulder… it didn’t just magically disappear the day I learned about the observer effect. But my relationship to it underwent a radical transformation. Instead of treating it as an enemy to be vanquished, an inconvenient “other” that was disrupting my life, I began to approach it as a wise messenger. I started a new practice. Several times a day, I would stop, place my hand gently on my shoulder, close my eyes, and simply breathe. I would consciously drop my awareness out of my busy, analytical mind and into the warm, spacious field of my heart. I would intentionally call up a feeling of gratitude—not for the pain, but for my body’s tireless, lifelong work of keeping me alive.
And then, I would ask, whispering into the quiet of my own being. “What do you need me to know? What is the message you are holding for me?”
Slowly, gently, over days and weeks, the story began to emerge. It wasn’t a lightning bolt, but a gradual unfolding. Images, feelings, and long-forgotten memories surfaced. It was a story of carrying too much responsibility, of an old, inherited family belief that I had to “shoulder the burden” for others in order to be worthy of love. It was a pattern of energy and tension wired deep into my nervous system from early childhood. By observing this pattern with the coherent, loving energy of my heart—with compassion instead of judgment—I wasn’t “fixing” it. I was illuminating it. I was bringing the focused, powerful light of consciousness to a place that had been held in shadow for decades.
And as I did, the particles began to rearrange. The rigid neural pathways that held the “shoulder the burden” story began to soften and unwire. The chronic tension, no longer being fed by the chaotic energy of fear and resistance, began to release its grip. The pain lessened, day by day, and in its place, a new and wonderful sense of spaciousness emerged. A new possibility for being in my body and in the world.
This is the work. It is the sacred practice of becoming a conscious, heart-centered observer of your own magnificent being. It is the deep, embodied understanding that your thoughts and intentions are not trivial—they are the most potent healing tools you possess. You are not a victim of your biology or your circumstances. You are in a constant, dynamic, creative dialogue with the quantum field of the universe, and the language of that dialogue is energy, frequency, and consciousness.
Your body is not a machine made of separate, solid parts. It is a shimmering, intelligent field of energy and information, always shimmering with potential. Your heart is not just a pump. It is the central sun of your being, radiating a field of information that constantly shapes your world. And you… you are the observer, the artist, the one whose loving gaze can call forth a reality of profound healing, wholeness, and grace.
