A Practice for Releasing Anger and Restoring Liver Harmony

I want to begin with a confession.

And one of the most profound aspects of this human experience is navigating the powerful, often overwhelming, energy of anger.

I remember a time, many years ago, when I was consumed by a rage so potent it felt like a physical presence in my body. It was a hot, bitter stone lodged just under my right ribcage, and its heat radiated through my entire being. I was angry at a situation I felt powerless to change, and the injustice of it all felt like a poison I was forced to swallow every day. My sleep was disturbed, my digestion was a mess, and a constant, low-grade headache became my unwelcome companion. My body, in its infinite wisdom, was screaming at me. It was my liver, the body’s master alchemist, crying out under the strain of metabolizing so much unprocessed rage.

We tend to think of anger as a “negative” emotion, something to be suppressed, controlled, or immediately banished. We’re taught to “calm down,” to “let it go,” to not make a scene. But what if anger isn’t the enemy? What if it’s simply a messenger, a powerful surge of energy designed to show us where our boundaries have been crossed, where our truth has been violated, or where a deep injustice is occurring?

Your liver, that incredible, resilient organ, is responsible for over 500 vital functions in your body. It’s a master metabolizer, breaking down not just the food you eat and the toxins you encounter, but the very experiences of your life. When you experience something that feels unjust, unfair, or enraging, it’s your liver and its partner, the gallbladder, that are tasked with processing that energetic and emotional load. When the load is too heavy, or when the anger is suppressed and left to fester, it can crystallize into what I call bitterness—a hard, dense energy that can manifest as physical symptoms, from digestive issues and fatigue to, in the case of the gallbladder, literal stones.

This isn’t just poetry; it’s a reflection of the deep connection between our minds, our emotions, and our physical bodies. Modern neuroscience is beginning to map the very neural pathways that confirm this ancient wisdom. When we repeatedly experience and suppress an emotion like anger, we strengthen the neural circuits associated with that pattern. The body learns that this powerful energy is unsafe to express, so it stores it away in our tissues, creating a state of chronic internal stress. But here is the beautiful, hopeful truth: because of neuroplasticity, our brains and bodies can change. We can create new neural pathways. We can learn to relate to our anger in a new way—not as a poison to be stored, but as a powerful life force to be honored, listened to, and moved through our systems with conscious awareness.

So, how do we begin to metabolize what we’ve been storing? How do we work with the body to release the grip of old anger and restore harmony to our liver and our entire being? It begins with creating a safe space within yourself to feel what you are feeling, without judgment. It begins with practice.

Here is a guided practice I offer to you, a gentle yet powerful way to begin this process of release and restoration. Find a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed for at least 15-20 minutes.

A Guided Practice for Liver-Gallbladder Healing

Step 1: The Anger Release Breath

Begin by sitting or lying down comfortably. Close your eyes and bring your awareness to your breath. For the first few moments, simply notice the natural rhythm of your inhale and exhale.

Now, I invite you to gently bring to mind a situation that has been causing you to feel anger, frustration, or resentment. Don’t force it, just allow an image, a memory, or a feeling to surface. Notice where you feel this anger in your body. Perhaps it’s a tightness in your jaw, a heat in your chest, or a familiar ache under your right ribs. Just notice.

We will now use a specific breath to begin moving this energy. It’s called the Wood Chopper breath. On your inhale, reach your arms up overhead, perhaps even interlacing your fingers. As you inhale, imagine you are gathering up all of that hot, stagnant energy of anger into your arms. Then, on your exhale, you will forcefully swing your arms down as you make a loud “Ha!” sound from your belly. The exhale is sharp, audible, and comes from your diaphragm. You can bend your knees and fold forward as you do this.

Let’s try it. Inhale, reaching up, gathering the anger… and “Ha!” as you swing down. Inhale, gather it all up… “Ha!” Do this for at least 8-10 repetitions, or until you feel a shift in the energy. It might feel awkward at first, but allow yourself to be fully in the practice. You are giving your anger a voice and a way out.

After your last repetition, come back to a still, seated position. Place your hands on your lap and just feel. Notice the tingling, the vibration, the new sense of space you may have created.

Step 2: The Liver Meditation

Now, bring your right hand to your right side, just below your ribcage. This is the home of your liver. Let your hand rest there, a warm, comforting presence.

Close your eyes again and bring all of your awareness to this space beneath your hand. Imagine you can breathe directly into your liver. With each inhale, picture a beautiful, healing green light—the color of new spring leaves—flowing into your liver, bathing every cell in soothing, cleansing energy. With each exhale, imagine a murky, grey smoke leaving your liver, carrying with it all the old bitterness, resentment, and unprocessed anger.

Inhale the vibrant, healing green light… and exhale the grey smoke of what no longer serves you. Continue this for several minutes. You might whisper words of gratitude to your liver. Thank you for working so hard for me. Thank you for processing so much. I am here with you now. You are safe. Feel the warmth of your hand, the gentle rhythm of your breath, and the healing energy of the green light restoring your liver to its natural state of harmony and ease.

Step 3: The Forgiveness Visualization

As you continue to breathe into your liver, allow your awareness to soften. Forgiveness is not about condoning harmful behavior. It is not for the other person. It is for you. It is the act of releasing the bitter poison of resentment from your own system so that you can be free.

Bring to mind the person or situation connected to the anger you’ve been holding. Imagine them standing before you. See them not as a monster, but as a soul on their own journey, with their own wounds and their own struggles. You don’t need to understand or excuse their actions. You are simply seeing them through the eyes of compassion.

Now, imagine a cord of energy connecting your liver to them. This cord may be thick and dark, pulsating with the energy of your anger and resentment. See it clearly. Now, from your heart, imagine you are calling forth a beautiful pair of golden scissors. These are your scissors of freedom. When you are ready, use these scissors to cut the cord. See it sever completely. The end attached to you retracts back into your body, where it is dissolved in the green light of your liver meditation. The other end retracts back to the other person. It is their energy, and you are no longer required to carry it.

Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, whisper the words, “I release you. I set myself free.” Feel the profound shift as you reclaim your energy and your power. Stay with this feeling of freedom for a few moments.

A Daily Practice for Liver Harmony

This deep practice is something you can return to whenever you feel the heat of anger rising. For daily maintenance, I recommend a simple morning practice. Upon waking, place your right hand over your liver, take three deep breaths, and send gratitude to this vital organ. This simple act of conscious connection can make a profound difference in how your body metabolizes the experiences of your day.

Anger is a sacred messenger. It is a fire that can either burn us from the inside out or fuel our transformation. By learning to listen to its message, to honor its power, and to move its energy with conscious practice, we can alchemize this potent force into a catalyst for profound healing and a deeper connection to our own truth.
