I want to begin with gratitude — for you, for your willingness to be here, for the courage it takes to look within.
Especially when it comes to the invisible lines we draw around ourselves—the energetic architecture of our boundaries.
A client came to me years ago, a lovely woman with a quick, bright smile and a weariness in her bones that felt ancient. Let’s call her Claire. She was a painter, but she hadn’t touched a brush in months. Her hands, she explained, her voice catching, were too swollen and painful to hold even the lightest brush. Rheumatoid arthritis, the doctors had said. An autoimmune condition. Her body’s immune system, the very system designed to protect her, was attacking the delicate synovial tissues of her joints, creating inflammation that felt like a fire in her hands.
As she spoke, I listened not just to her words, but to the energy beneath them. I heard the story of a lifetime of shoulds. Of being the good daughter to an ailing mother, the supportive friend through countless dramas, the ever-available colleague who stayed late to help others finish their projects. She had a profound gift for empathy, for feeling what others felt, a trait that made her a beloved friend and confidante. But the lines had blurred. Her energy field, her very sense of self, had become porous. She was a human sponge, constantly soaking up the emotional states of others—their anxiety, their anger, their despair—leaving her depleted, confused, and in a state of chronic, low-grade defense. She didn’t know where she ended and others began.
Her body, in its infinite and sometimes painful wisdom, was simply reflecting this pattern back to her in the most literal way imaginable. It had lost the ability to distinguish self from other. The immune cells, which should have been her staunchest defenders, had become confused. They saw her own tissues as foreign invaders and launched a relentless attack. Her body was at war with itself, the ultimate and most tragic form of boundary confusion.
The Body’s Sacred Border
Your immune system is a miracle of discernment. It is the body’s intelligence agency, its border patrol, its sophisticated surveillance network. Every second of every day, it is making millions of complex decisions. Is this cell me? Is this protein friend or foe? Is this bacterium a harmless resident or a dangerous invader? This is the biological basis of boundaries, a constant, dynamic process of recognition and response.
When this system is healthy, it operates with a fluid, graceful precision. It protects, it defends, but it also knows when to stand down. It’s not just a blunt instrument of attack. It coexists with the trillions of bacteria in our gut—the microbiome—understanding them as essential allies. It learns and remembers, creating a library of past encounters to respond more efficiently in the future. This is a system built on relationship, communication, and a deep, cellular wisdom.
But what happens when our energetic and emotional boundaries are chronically breached? What happens when, from a very young age, we learn that our survival depends on attuning to the needs and moods of our caregivers at the expense of our own inner world? We learn to say yes when our body is screaming no. We learn to smile when we are heartbroken. We take on the unspoken anger of a parent, the simmering anxiety of a partner, the heavy grief of a friend, because we don’t know how to do otherwise. We don’t know that we are, in fact, a separate self, with our own feelings, our own needs, our own sacred space.
This is not a failing. It is a brilliant survival strategy. Our nervous systems are wired for connection, for attachment. As children, our very lives depend on maintaining that bond. So we adapt. We become exquisitely sensitive to the emotional weather around us, molding ourselves to fit what is needed, to keep the peace, to earn love. We create deep neural pathways that equate self-abandonment with safety. The pattern becomes so ingrained, so automatic, that we don’t even recognize it as a choice. It’s just…how we are.
Until the body speaks up. Until the whispers of fatigue, brain fog, and digestive issues become the shouts of chronic inflammation, persistent allergies, or the profound crisis of an autoimmune condition. The body, in its relentless love for you, is trying to get your attention. It is creating a physical boundary—a painful, inflamed, unavoidable one—to show you where your energetic ones have dissolved.
The body is a sacred messenger. Its symptoms are not enemies to be vanquished, but communications to be decoded. With compassion and curiosity, we can learn their language.
Autoimmune conditions are the ultimate boundary confusion. The body, in a desperate attempt to define itself, turns on its own tissues. This must not be me, it seems to say, attacking the thyroid (Hashimoto's), the joints (Rheumatoid Arthritis), the myelin sheath of the nerves (Multiple Sclerosis), the gut lining (Crohn's). It is a heartbreaking and deeply intelligent response to an impossible situation. It is the body’s way of screaming: Where do I end and you begin? Who am I, if not this collection of responsibilities and relationships?

So what do we do? How do we begin to untangle these ancient patterns and teach our bodies a new way of being? The path is not one of building harsh, rigid walls. It is not about shutting down our beautiful empathy or closing our hearts. It is about cultivating discernment.
Discernment is a gentle, loving, and exquisitely precise sorting process. It is the ability to feel an energy, a request, or a situation and ask, with genuine, non-judgmental curiosity: Is this mine? Is this truly for me, right now? Does this nourish me, or does it deplete me?
This is not a mental exercise. You cannot think your way to good boundaries. It is a felt sense, a wisdom that lives in the body. It begins with the radical act of pausing. When a request is made of you, when you feel that familiar, urgent pull to jump in and fix something for someone else, can you give yourself a single, conscious breath? Can you create a tiny pocket of sacred space between the stimulus and your habitual response?
In that space, you can drop your awareness out of the story in your head and into the sensations of your body. Place a hand on your heart or your belly. What do you feel? A tightening in your chest? A clenching in your gut? A subtle sense of dread? Or do you feel a sense of expansion, a lightness, a quiet hum of rightness? Your body knows the truth. It always, always does. We have just been conditioned for a lifetime to ignore its clear, simple signals.
Learning to hear and trust these signals is a practice. It is the work of neuroplasticity—of consciously choosing a new response, again and again, creating a new neural pathway that says, My inner experience is a valid and trustworthy guide. At first, it may feel terribly selfish or wrong. You may feel a wave of guilt or fear. That is the old pattern, the inner child’s survival strategy, fighting for its life. Acknowledge it with immense compassion. Ah, there is the fear that I will be abandoned if I don’t say yes. Thank you for trying so hard to protect me for all these years. And then, gently, lovingly, as the wise adult you are now, choose a different path.
Choose to honor the wisdom of your own weariness. Choose to protect your own precious creative energy. Choose to believe, as an act of faith, that you are worthy of your own care, just as much as anyone else.
As you begin to practice this inner discernment, your outer world will begin to shift. This is the part no one likes to talk about. The people in your life who are used to your porous boundaries may protest, consciously or unconsciously. They may call you selfish. They may be confused. That is okay. This is part of the process. You are teaching them how to be in a new, healthier relationship with you—a relationship based on respect, authenticity, and the beautiful truth that your needs matter. Some relationships may fall away. Others will deepen in beautiful and surprising ways.
And your body, your beautiful, loyal body, will feel the shift. The constant state of high alert, the sympathetic nervous system overdrive, can begin to soften. The immune system, no longer needing to scream for your attention through the fire of inflammation, can begin to return to its natural state of intelligent balance and discernment. It can learn, through your own lived example of setting loving limits, what is truly self and what is other. It can learn that it is safe to protect, without attacking. It can finally come to rest.
This is the journey from porousness to presence. It is the slow, sacred work of healing the deepest patterns of self-abandonment. It is coming home to the sacred, sovereign ground of your own being, and finding that you were worthy of that love and protection all along.
With infinite love and support on your journey, Susan
