How Beliefs Shape Your Biology

I was in a workshop once, years ago, when the facilitator asked a question that stopped the room cold.

We walk around in these miraculous bodies, these intricate webs of tissue and bone, electricity and fluid, and most of the time, we treat them like cars. We expect them to run perfectly, we get frustrated when a part breaks down, and we often ignore the warning lights on the dashboard until we’re stranded on the side of the road, bewildered and wondering how we got here.

But what if the body isn’t a machine at all? What if it’s a sacred messenger, a wise and constant companion, whispering—and sometimes shouting—the truths our conscious minds are not yet ready to hear? What if that persistent ache in your lower back isn’t just a sign of a bad mattress, but a physical echo of feeling profoundly unsupported in your life? What if the tightness in your throat, that feeling of a lump you can’t quite swallow, is more than just a seasonal allergy… what if it’s the weight of a thousand unspoken words, a lifetime of truths you’ve held back for fear of making waves?

I’ve sat with hundreds of dear ones in my healing practice over the years, bearing witness to the silent stories their bodies are telling. I have seen, with a clarity that leaves no room for doubt, a profound and undeniable truth, one that modern science is only just beginning to fully embrace: our beliefs, thoughts, and deepest feelings are not separate from our physical bodies. They are the architects of our biology. They are, quite literally, shaping us from the inside out, cell by precious cell.

The Ghost in the Machine Is You

For a long time, we were taught to believe in a kind of genetic determinism. The idea that our DNA is a fixed blueprint, a life sentence handed down from our ancestors. You have the gene for this, the predisposition for that. It’s a story of powerlessness, really. A story that leaves us as victims of our own heredity, passengers in a biological vehicle we have no control over.

But a revolutionary field of science, known as epigenetics, is telling a much more hopeful, and far more interesting, story. Epigenetics, which literally means “above the genes,” is the study of how our behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way our genes work. It’s not about changing the DNA sequence itself—the fundamental code remains the same. It’s about the expression of that code. It’s about deciding which genes get turned on and which get turned off, which chapters of our genetic story are read aloud and which remain silent.

Imagine your DNA as a vast library, containing the potential for every human characteristic. Genetic determinism would say that the library is pre-selected, and you can only read the books that are already open on the table. Epigenetics, however, reveals that you are the librarian. Your experiences, your perceptions, your emotions… they are the signals that tell the librarian which books to pull from the shelves and which to put back. A stressful thought, a moment of pure joy, a deeply held belief—these are all instructions that send epigenetic markers, like little chemical sticky notes, to attach to our DNA and command our genes into action or silence.

The pioneering cell biologist Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., demonstrated this beautifully in his groundbreaking stem cell research. He placed genetically identical stem cells into different petri dishes, each with a unique culture medium—a different environment. In one dish, the cells became muscle. In another, they became bone. In a third, they became fat cells. The cells’ fate wasn’t sealed by their genes; it was determined by their environment. Lipton realized that for the cells in our bodies, the “culture medium” is the blood, and the composition of that blood is directly shaped by our brain’s perception of the world. Our beliefs, filtered through the brain, create the chemistry that either nourishes our cells into health or signals them into distress.

Every thought you think is not just an ephemeral wisp of energy. It becomes chemistry. It becomes an electrical signal. It becomes a vibration that your fifty trillion cells are constantly listening to, attuning themselves to the song you are singing with your mind.

The Pharmacy of the Mind

We have all heard of the placebo effect. It’s often dismissed as “all in your head,” but it is perhaps the most potent and scientifically documented proof of the biology of belief. A patient is given a sugar pill, told it is a powerful new drug, and their symptoms miraculously improve. The body, believing it is receiving medicine, activates its own innate healing capacities. It produces its own painkillers, its own anti-inflammatories. It becomes its own pharmacy, dispensing the precise chemical compounds needed for healing, simply because it believes it is supposed to.

But we don’t often talk about its shadow twin—the nocebo effect. This is when a negative belief creates a negative physical outcome. A doctor tells a patient they have three months to live, and the patient dies in exactly three months, even if the autopsy later reveals the diagnosis was incorrect. A person believes they are allergic to a certain flower, and they break out in a rash when presented with a plastic version of it. The belief itself becomes the toxin, the self-fulfilling prophecy written into the language of our cells. The body, in its profound and innocent wisdom, simply follows the instructions it is given by the mind.

This isn’t about blame. It’s not about suggesting that people are “thinking themselves sick.” It is about reclaiming a power we have forgotten we possess. The power of consciousness to inform and transform matter. It is a sacred and awesome responsibility, one that invites us into a deeper relationship with ourselves. If Bruce Lipton's petri dishes stayed with you, epigenetics and changing your genetic expression carries that thread further into daily life.

Shifting the Blueprint

I remember a client I’ll call Diane. She came to me with debilitating pain in her right shoulder, a pain she’d had for years. She’d tried everything—physiotherapy, massage, medication—with no lasting relief. In our sessions, as we gently explored the landscape of her life, a theme emerged. As the eldest daughter in a large family with a chronically ill mother, she had been the designated caretaker since she was a little girl. She carried the weight of everyone’s well-being, the unspoken responsibility for everyone’s happiness. Her shoulder, the joint that governs our capacity to carry and to reach, was screaming the truth her conscious mind had normalized. It was literally buckling under the weight of the world she had placed upon it.

The work wasn’t about forcing the pain to go away. It was about listening to it. We didn’t try to violently uproot the belief that she had to care for everyone. Instead, we gently inquired. What would it be like to set just one of those burdens down? What would it feel like to receive support, instead of always giving it? At first, the very idea felt terrifying to her, a betrayal of her identity. But slowly, through breath and presence and a deep, compassionate listening, she began to create a new neural pathway in her brain. A new possibility.

She started to believe that it was safe to let go. That her worth was not tied to her endless doing for others. And as that new belief began to take root, her shoulder began to release its grip. The pain, which had been a constant companion for a decade, simply… dissolved. Her body, finally feeling heard, let go of the alarm bell. It had done its job beautifully, delivering the message she so desperately needed to hear.

This is the heart of the work. It is not about fighting with your body or your mind. It is about entering into a loving dialogue, becoming a student of your own inner landscape.

  1. Listen Gently: When a physical symptom arises, instead of immediately trying to silence it, get quiet. Place a hand on that part of your body. Breathe into it. Ask it, with genuine curiosity, “Beloved one, what is the message you have for me? What truth are you trying to show me?” You might be surprised by the answers that arise from the quiet wisdom of your cells.

  2. Inquire with Compassion: Notice the thoughts and beliefs that surface. Perhaps it’s “I’m not good enough,” or “I have to do it all myself,” or “It’s not safe to be seen.” Don’t judge them or push them away. Just notice them with a gentle curiosity. Ask, “Where did I learn this? Whose voice is this, really?” Often, these are the inherited beliefs of our family, our culture, our childhood experiences, running on autopilot in our subconscious mind.

  3. Introduce a New Possibility: You don’t have to believe it fully at first. Just open a window. What if it were possible to feel supported? What if I am already worthy, just as I am? What if it’s safe to be my authentic self? The science of neuroplasticity shows us that the brain is capable of changing and forming new connections throughout our lives. By repeatedly and gently introducing a new, more loving thought, you begin to carve a new riverbed for your energy to flow through. You create a new song for your cells to sing.

Your body is not your enemy. It has been on your side since the moment you were conceived, working tirelessly to keep you in balance, in health, in life. It is the most faithful friend you will ever have. Learning to listen to its wisdom, to honor its messages, and to consciously cultivate an inner environment of love and safety is the most profound healing journey you can ever take.
