Elevating Moments: Filling Emptiness with Love

Close your eyes for a moment — just a breath or two — and notice what your body is telling you right now.

And one of the most profound aspects of this human experience is the feeling of emptiness. That hollow ache in the center of your being, the quiet hum of less than, of not enough. It can feel like a ghost haunting the hallways of your heart. I remember a time, years ago, sitting in my quiet living room after a long day of seeing clients. The house was still, the city outside was humming its evening song, and a profound sense of emptiness washed over me. It wasn’t loneliness, not exactly. It was a feeling of being a vessel with a hole in the bottom, everything I poured in—love, work, connection—seeming to drain right out, leaving a vacant space behind. My tea was warm in my hands, the scent of jasmine in the air, yet all I could feel was a cold, internal cavern.

What do we do when that feeling arrives? For most of us, the immediate, instinctual response is to fill it. And quickly. We reach for another cookie, pour another glass of wine, scroll endlessly through the curated lives of others. We throw ourselves into work, striving and achieving, hoping the next promotion will finally plug the hole. We seek out relationships, believing another person’s love can make us whole, only to find the emptiness is a traveling companion, following us from one connection to the next. We try to outrun it, to numb it, to distract ourselves from its persistent, quiet call. We become experts in the art of avoidance, masters of the quick fix.

But what if that’s the wrong approach entirely? What if the emptiness isn’t a void to be feared and filled, but an invitation to be answered? What if it is a sacred summons from the deepest part of you?

The Sacred Space of Nothingness

Our culture is terrified of emptiness. We value productivity, connection, and fullness. An empty calendar is a sign of failure. An empty house, a symbol of loneliness. We have been taught that to be empty is to be lacking. But in the wisdom of the body and the quiet truths of the universe, emptiness is the prerequisite for creation. A womb is empty before it carries life. A field lies fallow before it can receive new seed. A deep breath requires a full exhale.

Consider your lungs, that sacred interface between your inner world and the outer atmosphere. With every single breath, you are participating in a divine exchange. You draw in the life force of the universe, and you release what is no longer needed, what is toxic to your system. But to take in that full, life-giving breath, you must first empty yourself completely. If you only ever take shallow sips of air, your body remains in a state of chronic deprivation. Depression and anxiety are often accompanied by this shallow breathing, a physical manifestation of feeling suffocated by life. The emptiness of a full exhale is not a void; it is the promise of a deeper inhale. It is the space that allows you to truly receive.

That hollow feeling inside is not a sign that you are broken. It is a sign that you have created space. The question is not how do I fill this? but rather, what is waiting to be born into this space? When we constantly stuff the emptiness with external things, we are essentially telling the universe, “No thank you, I’m full.” We miss the opportunity to receive what is truly meant for us, what is waiting patiently on the threshold of our awareness.

Think of the stomach, that alchemical cauldron of experience. When it’s constantly full, it cannot properly digest. It becomes sluggish, overwhelmed. Indigestion and ulcers are the body’s way of screaming, “This is too much! I cannot metabolize all of this.” The same is true for our energetic and emotional bodies. When we are constantly consuming—food, media, drama, work—we cannot properly metabolize our own lives. The emptiness is a signal from your soul to pause, to create space for digestion, for integration. It is an invitation to stop looking outside and to finally, gently, turn your gaze within.

Rewiring the Void

Turning toward the void rather than away from it is a radical act. It goes against every survival instinct we have. For the primitive brain, emptiness can signal scarcity, abandonment, death. So when we feel it, our nervous system, that elegant and ancient electrical network, can fire off alarm bells. The sympathetic nervous system—our “fight or flight” response—kicks in. The heart races, the breath becomes shallow, the mind starts spinning stories of lack and fear. This is a deeply ingrained neural pathway, a groove worn deep by millennia of human experience and perhaps by our own earliest moments of life when our needs weren’t met.

But here is a very good thing to know: you are not beholden to those ancient pathways. Through the miracle of neuroplasticity, we can create new ones. We can teach our nervous system that emptiness is not a threat, but a sanctuary. We can shift from a state of sympathetic alarm to one of parasympathetic restoration—the “rest and digest” state where healing occurs.

How do we do this? We begin with the body. The body is the sacred messenger, the grounding point of our journey. When the feeling of emptiness arises, instead of reaching for your phone, try this:

  1. Find Your Feet. Stand or sit, and bring all of your awareness to the soles of your feet. Feel their connection to the ground beneath you. Feel the texture of the floor, the temperature, the solidness of it. Imagine roots growing down from your feet, deep into the supportive embrace of the earth, anchoring you in the present moment. Your feet are designed to ground you, to remind you that you are held and supported in every moment, no matter what emotional storms are passing through.

  2. Breathe into the Space. Gently place a hand on the part of your body where the emptiness feels most present—perhaps your chest, your belly. Now, take a slow, deep breath, and imagine your breath flowing directly into that space, as if you could fill it with warm, golden light. Don’t try to change the feeling or push it away. Simply breathe into it. With each inhale, you are bringing presence and oxygen—life force—to this part of yourself. With each exhale, you are releasing the need to fight it, softening the edges of the ache.

  3. Listen with Your Heart. The heart is the first declaration of your existence, the central sun of your being. It knows a wisdom beyond the mind’s comprehension. Ask your heart, What is the message in this emptiness? What are you making space for? Don’t search for an answer with your mind, which will only offer you logic and old stories. Just listen with the quiet, receptive intelligence of your heart. The answer may come as a feeling, an image, a single word. It may not come at all in that moment, and that is perfectly okay. The act of listening is itself the healing.

  4. Offer Compassion. This is perhaps the most crucial step. Bring a profound sense of kindness to the part of you that feels empty. This feeling is not an enemy; it is a young part of you that is feeling lost and alone. Speak to it as you would a beloved child. You might say, I know you feel empty. I am here with you. I am not going anywhere. This act of compassionate nonjudgment is the balm that soothes the oldest wounds.

By repeating this practice, you are carving a new neural pathway. You are teaching your entire being—mind, body, and soul—that it is safe to be with emptiness. You are transforming the void from a place of fear into a sacred space of possibility.

The Fullness of Being

What we discover when we have the courage to sit in the quiet of the void is that it is not truly empty at all. It is full. It is teeming with the energy of pure potential. It is the unified field of consciousness, the web of your being, that holds all the parts of you together in a shimmering, miraculous totality. The emptiness is the silence between the notes that makes the music possible. It is the space between the stars that allows the constellations to shine.

That feeling of being a vessel with a hole in the bottom begins to transform. You realize the hole was never a flaw. It was an opening. It was the place where the light could get in. It was the portal through which your own soul could finally pour forth into your life, filling you from the inside out with a love that is not dependent on external circumstances.

When we stop frantically trying to fill ourselves from the outside, we create the opportunity to be filled from within. We begin to source our sense of wholeness not from achievements or relationships, but from our own divine essence. We discover that the love, peace, and fulfillment we were seeking were never “out there” to begin with. They were waiting patiently within the supposed emptiness, ready to be born into the space we finally allowed.

This is the journey of transformation. It is not about becoming a better, shinier, more “full” version of yourself. It is about developing a conscious, loving relationship with all of yourself—including the parts that feel empty, lost, or broken. It is about realizing that you were never broken to begin with. You have always been whole.

May you have the courage to befriend your own emptiness. May you trust the sacred space it creates. And may you be astonished by the love that rushes in to fill you when you finally become still enough to receive it.
