A woman came to me years ago, her body a tightly coiled spring of anxiety. She had been everywhere, tried everything. She spoke of her history in a rushed, disconnected way, her eyes darting around the room as if the story was happening just over her shoulder. Her shoulders were permanently braced for impact, her breath a shallow catch in her upper chest. She was exhausted from the sheer effort of holding herself together.
We began with Cranial Sacral Therapy. Gently, my hands cradled her head, listening. Not for words, but for the subtle, rhythmic pulse of the cerebrospinal fluid—the body’s own river of life. In that profound quiet, something began to soften. The frantic monologue of her mind started to slow. Her breath, for the first time in what she said felt like years, dropped into her belly. But the true unfolding, the deep transformation, began when we started to weave other threads into our work. It wasn’t just one thing… it was the symphony of healing that her system was crying out for.
It’s a tricky business, being human. We are taught to look for the one answer, the single magic bullet that will fix our pain. But the body… the body is not a machine with broken parts. It is a sacred, intelligent ecosystem. And healing, true healing, is rarely about a single intervention. It’s about creating a rich, nourishing environment where the body’s own profound wisdom can finally come forward.
The Quiet Rhythm of the Nervous System
At its heart, Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST) is a conversation with the nervous system. It’s a gentle, non-invasive practice that works directly with the craniosacral system—the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. This system has a subtle, palpable rhythm, much like a tide. A trained therapist can feel this rhythm and, through exquisitely light touch, help the body release restrictions and tensions that are held deep within its tissues.
From a neuroscience perspective, this is profound work. The craniosacral rhythm is intimately connected to the autonomic nervous system, the command center for our fight-or-flight (sympathetic) and rest-and-digest (parasympathetic) responses. For so many of us, life’s traumas, stresses, and heartbreaks have left our nervous systems stuck in a state of high alert—the sympathetic state. We live with an underlying hum of anxiety, our bodies braced for a danger that has long since passed.
CST is a direct invitation to the parasympathetic state. The gentle touch, the deep listening… it all sends a powerful signal to the brain: You are safe. You can let go. You can rest. This shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic is not just a nice idea; it’s a physiological reality. Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory gives us a beautiful map for understanding this. It shows us that our nervous system is constantly scanning our environment for cues of safety or danger. When it perceives safety—through a calm voice, a gentle touch, a feeling of being truly seen and heard—it shifts into the ventral vagal state, a state of social engagement and connection. This is where healing happens. This is where we feel safe enough to be vulnerable, to connect with others, and to access our own creativity and intuition. Cranial Sacral Therapy is a powerful way to communicate directly with the vagal nerve, whispering to it that all is well, that it can stand down from high alert and come into a state of grace and ease. As the system settles, the body’s innate capacity for healing and self-repair comes online. Neural pathways begin to shift. The brain learns, on a cellular level, a new possibility of being. But this is often just the beginning of the journey. Once the system feels safe enough to quiet down, we can begin to introduce other powerful allies.
Weaving a Tapestry of Healing
I’ve come to see my work not as applying separate techniques, but as weaving a tapestry of support, tailored to the unique being in front of me. Cranial Sacral Therapy creates the foundational quiet, the safe container. From there, we can explore other languages of the body and soul.
Synergy with Energy Healing
We are not just physical beings; we are energy in matter. Our beliefs, our emotions, our life experiences are all encoded in our energetic field. CST works on the physical and fluidic body, while energy healing modalities—like Reiki or the work I do, which is a form of shamanic healing—address the subtle energy body. The two are inextricably linked.
I remember working with a client whose sacrum, the triangular bone at the base of the spine, felt incredibly stuck during a CST session. It was dense, immobile. As I held it, I also tuned into the energy of the space. I sensed a profound, ancient grief held there, a story that wasn’t just his, but seemed to travel down his ancestral line. We didn’t need to analyze it. We simply brought in the frequency of compassion, allowing the energy to move, to be seen, to be honored. As the energy shifted, I felt the physical structure of the sacrum soften and release under my hands. The physical and the energetic danced together, each informing and amplifying the other. The body released the story, and the energy field found a new coherence. I think of a young musician I worked with, a brilliant guitarist who had lost the joy in his playing. His hands were cramped and painful, a condition that doctors had been unable to diagnose. In our sessions, we started with CST, and I could feel a tremendous amount of frozen energy in his shoulders and arms, the residue of years of relentless practice and performance anxiety. One day, as I was gently holding his arm, I felt a subtle tremor. Instead of trying to stop it, we followed it. I asked him, 'If this tremor had a sound, what would it be?' He was quiet for a long time, and then he whispered, 'It’s a scream.' We stayed with that, breathing with it, allowing the silent scream to finally be heard. We then wove in some energy work, clearing the energetic imprint of all the criticism and self-doubt he had absorbed over the years. Slowly, over many months, the pain in his hands began to subside. But more importantly, the music began to flow again, this time from a place of love, not fear.
The Still Point of Meditation and Breathwork
Meditation and conscious breathwork are practices of presence. They train the mind to rest in the present moment and use the breath as an anchor to the body. This is a perfect complement to the deep stillness cultivated in a Cranial Sacral session. CST can often feel like a deep, involuntary meditation. The mind quiets, the body softens, and you enter a state of profound rest.
When we consciously add breathwork to this, the effects are magnified. If I feel a client holding their breath—a common, unconscious pattern when approaching a place of stored trauma—I might gently whisper, “What would it be like to send a little breath right there?” This simple invitation empowers them to become an active participant in their own release. The breath becomes a tool, a wave of consciousness and oxygen that can travel into the tight, forgotten places of the body, bringing with it the message: I am here with you. It’s okay to let go. This conscious engagement helps to rewire the neural pathways of fear, replacing them with pathways of presence and self-compassion.

Explore Healing SessionsThe Body’s Story with Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing is a body-centered approach to healing trauma. It focuses on helping the body process and release the overwhelming energy of traumatic events that remains frozen in the nervous system. This aligns beautifully with the principles of CST. Both modalities honor the body as a sacred messenger and trust its innate intelligence to guide the healing process.
Where CST provides the deep, regulating quiet, somatic work gives us a language to track and integrate the body’s story as it emerges. A client might be in a deep state of relaxation on the table when a sudden tremor runs through their leg. Instead of ignoring it, we can get curious. “I notice your leg is wanting to move… can we just be with that for a moment?” We follow the sensation, the body’s own impulse to complete a defensive response that was thwarted long ago.
This is not about reliving the trauma; it’s about allowing the body to finally have its say, to discharge the stored survival energy in a safe and contained way. I once worked with a man who had been in a car accident decades earlier. During a CST session, his left shoulder began to tremble uncontrollably. By incorporating somatic principles, we allowed his body to complete the bracing and pushing motion he wasn’t able to make during the impact. Tears of relief streamed down his face. He wasn’t crying for the memory; he was crying because a part of his body, frozen in time for thirty years, had finally come home. The combination of the deep safety provided by CST and the gentle inquiry of somatic work allowed for a profound and lasting integration.
The Symphony of Wholeness
Combining these practices is not about throwing a collection of tools at a problem. It’s about listening—deeply, patiently, and without agenda—to what the body is asking for. It’s about recognizing that the path to wholeness is not linear. It’s a spiral, a dance. Some days, the body needs the profound, cellular rest of Cranial Sacral Therapy. On other days, it needs to tell its story through sensation, or to be flooded with the gentle light of energy healing, or to be anchored by the rhythm of the breath.
This integrated approach moves us beyond the limited idea of “fixing” ourselves. It invites us into a conscious, loving relationship with all parts of our being. It honors the intricate web of connection between our physical structure, our nervous system, our energy field, our emotions, and our soul. It trusts that you—your body, your spirit—hold the ultimate key to your own transformation.
When we create a container that is safe enough, compassionate enough, and spacious enough… the body’s own genius for healing will always, always lead the way. It will show us the next step, the next thread to weave into the beautiful, ever-unfolding tapestry of our lives.
