Breaking the Spell: How to Recognize and Release Inherited Beliefs

It’s a curious thing, this human experience. We arrive, blinking in the light, into a world already in motion, a story already being told. We spend our first years learning the language, the rules, the rhythms of the particular tribe we’re born into. And somewhere along the way, without ever consciously choosing, we absorb their beliefs as our own. They become the invisible architecture of our reality, the water we swim in. We don’t question if the water is wet; it simply is.

These inherited beliefs—these silent agreements we made before we could even speak—are like spells cast upon us. Not with malicious intent, not always, but with the quiet, insistent power of generations. This is how the world works. This is what you are capable of. This is what is safe. This is what is forbidden. They are the legacy of our ancestors’ joys, their sorrows, their fears, and their triumphs. And they live in us, shaping our choices, whispering in our ear, and often, holding us back from the life that is truly ours to live.

The Unseen Inheritance

Think of it like this: you are handed a map at birth. A beautiful, worn, hand-drawn map, filled with familiar landmarks and well-trodden paths. This map was drawn by your parents, and their parents before them. It shows you where to go, what to avoid, where the treasure is buried. For a time, this map is incredibly useful. It keeps you safe. It helps you navigate the known world.

But one day, you look up from the map and see a landscape it doesn’t describe. A shimmering mountain range in the distance, a path winding into a forest that the map labels as “dragons.” And a deep, quiet knowing rises within you—a longing to explore that. But the map says no. The map says it’s dangerous. The map says you’ll get lost. The spell of the map is strong. It feels like truth. It feels like love, even, the love of those who wanted to protect you.

So many of the beliefs that shape our lives were never ours to begin with. They were inherited, absorbed from our families, our cultures, our earliest experiences. Recognizing these inherited spells is the first step toward freedom. It’s the moment you realize you can draw your own map.

A Story of My Own

I remember a client I worked with years ago, a brilliant artist with a heart of gold. She created the most breathtaking paintings, vibrant and alive with a spirit that was uniquely hers. Yet, she could never bring herself to sell them. She’d sabotage every opportunity, miss every deadline, find a reason to pull back at the last moment. She came to me, distraught, believing she was simply a "procrastinator," lazy and undisciplined.

As we worked together, a memory surfaced. She was a little girl, no older than five, painting with joyous abandon at the kitchen table. Her father, a man who had struggled financially his whole life, walked in. He looked at her creation, and with a heavy sigh, said, “It’s a lovely hobby, sweetheart. But you can’t make a living as an artist. It’s a fool’s dream.”

He wasn’t being cruel. He was trying to protect her from the disappointment he had known. He was casting a spell of safety. But that spell became her reality. Art is a hobby. You can’t make a living from it. It’s a fool’s dream. This belief, inherited in a moment of love and fear, had been running her life for decades, a silent, powerful undercurrent. It was the "dragon" on her map.

The Body Remembers

These beliefs aren’t just abstract ideas floating in our minds. They are encoded in our bodies, in our very nervous systems. When that little girl heard her father’s words, her body likely responded. A tightening in her chest, a knot in her stomach, a subtle bracing for disappointment. The body, in its infinite wisdom, remembers. It stores the emotional charge of these experiences, creating a physiological pattern that gets triggered every time a similar situation arises.

This is where the insights of neuroscience become so illuminating. Our brains are wired for survival, and they create neural pathways based on our repeated experiences and the emotional weight they carry. An inherited belief, reinforced over years, becomes a well-worn neural superhighway. The thought “I can’t make a living from my art” triggers a cascade of stress hormones, a physiological state of fear and contraction, making it feel viscerally, physically true. It’s not a failure of willpower; it’s a deeply ingrained biological response.

The beautiful, hopeful truth, however, is neuroplasticity. The brain can and does change. The body can and does release old patterns. By bringing gentle, compassionate awareness to these bodily sensations, we can begin to unwind the spell. We can create new neural pathways. We can teach our nervous system that it is safe to explore beyond the edges of the old map. If the map you were handed at birth was drawn by hands long gone, there is real tenderness in this exploration of clearing wounds you did not create, and of the grief that was never yours to carry.

How to Recognize the Spells

So how do we begin to see the invisible? How do we recognize the spells we are living under? It begins with a gentle, curious inquiry.

  • Look for the recurring patterns. Where in your life do you feel stuck? What situations or themes seem to repeat, no matter how hard you try to change them? This is often the signature of an inherited belief at play.
  • Listen to your language. Pay attention to the absolute statements you make about yourself and the world. “I’m just not a creative person.” “You can’t trust anyone.” “Money is always a struggle.” These are often the echoes of inherited beliefs.
  • Feel into your body. When you think about a particular goal or dream, what happens in your body? Is there an openness, an expansion? Or is there a subtle (or not-so-subtle) contraction, a tightness, a feeling of dread? Your body is a powerful truth-teller. It will show you where the spells reside.

Take a moment, beloved one. Think of an area in your life where you feel limited. A dream you’ve held but never pursued. A desire that feels just out of reach. Whisper it to yourself. And then, listen. Listen not with your mind, but with your whole body. What sensations arise? What is the story your body is telling you? This is the beginning of the conversation. This is the first step to breaking the spell.

Releasing the Inheritance

Breaking the spell is not a battle. It is not about declaring war on your past or your family. It is a process of profound compassion and gentle release. It is about honoring the love and protection that may have been at the root of the belief, while also recognizing that it no longer serves you.

It’s about seeing the belief for what it is: a story. And you, dear one, are the author of your own life. You can choose to write a new one.

This process can be as simple and as profound as placing a hand on your heart when the old belief arises, and whispering, “Thank you. I see you. I know you were trying to keep me safe. But I am safe now. And I am choosing a new way.”

It’s about consciously, deliberately choosing thoughts, actions, and experiences that align with the new story you want to live. For my client, it meant starting small. She began by showing one painting to a trusted friend. Then she entered a small local art show. With each step, she was creating a new neural pathway, a new experience in her body that said, It is safe to share my art. My art has value. She was teaching her nervous system a new reality, one gentle step at a time.

This is the work of a lifetime. It is a journey of returning, over and over again, to the truth of who you are beneath the layers of inherited stories. It is the most courageous, most rewarding journey you will ever take.
